How to Fix Low Water Pressure in Your Tap or Shower

If you’re trying to fix low water pressure in your tap or shower, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common (and annoying) plumbing issues in South Africa.

Step 1: Test Other Taps Around the House 🚰

Try the hot and cold taps in other rooms.
If only one tap or shower has weak pressure, it’s likely a local blockage.
If all taps are low, the problem may be with the main water supply or pressure regulator.

Step 2: Clean the Aerator to Fix Low Water Pressure 🧼

Unscrew the aerator from your basin or sink tap.
Soak it in vinegar to remove limescale and grit.
For showers, remove the head and soak it too.
Rinse and screw back — often, that’s enough!

Step 3: Check the Angle Valve (Under the Basin or Sink) 🔧

Turn the angle valve (small tap under the basin or sink) fully open.
Sometimes, it’s only half open from a previous repair.
This restricts water flow — open it all the way and test again.

Step 4: Check for a Partially Closed Main Valve 🏡

Go to your outside water meter box.
Make sure the main valve is fully open — some municipalities adjust them during maintenance.
Also check your geyser’s shut-off valve if only hot water is low.

Step 5: If It’s a Mixer, It Might Be the Cartridge 🧩

Some modern mixers use a cartridge inside — if it’s blocked or worn out, pressure drops.
This is especially common with hot water.
